Frequently Asked Question’s

  • There is no cost to join the Age-Friendly University Global Network. Opportunities for sponsorship do exist.

  • We do not have standard deadlines for endorsement applications. The Executive Council meets every six weeks and reviews all applications received at least one week prior at that time. As a general rule, we recommend applications be submitted by the 31st of the following months to avoid delays:
January, March, May, July, August, October.

  • The time needed to complete the AFU GN application depends on the institute's existing structures. Some Universities may have already completed the work identifying existing activities at their institution; others may start from scratch. We expect the application preparation process to take between 3 and 12 months. Once the application has been submitted, it will be reviewed at the next Executive Council Meeting.

  • While ideally, all institutions would have activities across all 10 Principles, we recognize that some may opt to focus on specific Principles. To join the AFU GN, you only need to show activities or plans in four of the ten principles.

  • The Age-Friendly University designation is active for an initial 5-year period. At which time, it can be renewed.

  • Yes, you can access tools and resources to assist you in the application process right on our website.

  • Any questions can be directed to Info@AFUGN.org. You can also visit our Contact Page.

  • The Endorsement Letter must be signed by a member of the institution’s administration. Generally, this is the President or their designee. For example, depending on the governance structure, having the Chancellor or Provost sign may be appropriate. Others may designate an Associate Vice-President or Provost.

Individual faculty members, department administrators, or chairs are generally not appropriate.

  • The Age-Friendly University designation is a voluntary process. We welcome all higher education institutes to endorse the principles.
